The care of patients has never been so complicated. Health care professionals must
master increasing clinical knowledge and skills with grounding in ethics and economics of health care. Several decades
ago, the treatment of a patient often depended primarily upon the skill and knowledge of a specific doctor,
nurse or other practitioner. Now the treatment of the simplest medical condition can be complicated by restrictive
clauses in a contract, complicated payment systems, convoluted policies, and other obstacles that can shift the emphasis
away from the best interests of patients. Physicians and other health professionals often do not have time to educate
themselves about health system changes, to evaluate the conditions of their clinical practice and to resolve the
problems they discover.
